Living the Way of... Prayer

FRAGRANCE

Teach me Lord, to be sweet and gentle in all the events of life,

in disappointments, in the thoughtlessness of others,

in the insincerity of those I trusted,

 in the unfaithfulness of those on whom I relied.

 Let me put myself aside, to think of the happiness of others,

 to hide my little pains and heartaches

so that I may be the only one to suffer from them.

Teach me to profit by the suffering that comes across my path;

let me use it that it may mellow me, not harden or embitter me;

that it may make me patient, not irritable;

that it may make me broad in my forgiveness,

not narrow or proud or overbearing.

May no one be less good for having come within my influence;

no one less pure, less true, less kind, less noble,

for having been a fellow traveler with me

on our journey towards eternal life.

Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere.

Flood my soul with your spirit and life.

Penetrate and possess my whole being so completely

that my life may only be a radiance of yours.

Shine through me, and be so in me,

that every soul I come in contact with may feel your presence in my soul.

Let them look up and see me no longer, but only you my Jesus!

- John Henry Newman

Prayer... From The Christian Experience

- Matthew 6:6

 In those days he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.

A Contemporary Examen for Day’s End

Teresa Blythe

Make yourself comfortable….

You may want to light a candle

to signify the light of God illuminating your day.

Rest in silence for a few moments.

Ask God’s Spirit to lead you through your day.

Review your day.

If you could relive any one moment that brought you joy, which would it be? What happened in that moment that made it so life-giving?

Sit with that moment and allow it to give you life again.

Offer your gratitude to God for that moment.

If you could go back and change any one moment in your day, which would it be?

What made that moment so difficult?

Sit with that moment in the light of God’s love and allow yourself to feel whatever emotion you have.

Offer that moment to God for healing.

Make a note of these two moments in your day.

End by giving thanks to God for all the ways God has been with you—through the joy and the pain.

A Meditation

Finding Nourishment in Nature

 - Thich Nhat Hanh

Breathing in, I know I’m breathing in. In

Breathing out, I know I’m breathing out. Out

Breathing in, I see myself as a flower. Flower

Breathing out, I feel fresh. Fresh

Breathing in, I see myself as a mountain. Mountain

Breathing out, I feel solid. Solid

Breathing in, I become calm water. Water

Breathing out, I reflect the sky and the mountains. Reflecting

Breathing in, I become the vastness of space. Space

Breathing out, I feel infinite freedom. Free
